Is CBG Oil Better than CBD Oil?
CBG Oil seems to be the next big thing in the world of hemp-derived supplements. Both scientific studies and our own experience and feedback are showing that CBG has significant potential to optimise wellness and improve quality of life. But is it really better than CBD Oil? Let’s take a look.
What is CBG Oil?
CBG Oil is a highly beneficial oil that is extracted from hemp and is generally used as a food supplement to support general health and wellbeing.
Cannabigerol (CBG) is known as ‘the mother of all cannabinoids’ due to the fact that all other cannabinoids originate from CBG.
CBGA (the acidic form of CBG) naturally converts into CBDA, CBCA and THCA. Over time, or when subject to heat, these cannabinoids convert into CBD, CBC and THC. This conversion is called decarboxylation.
CBG is classed as a minor cannabinoid as it only naturally occurs in the hemp plant in very low amounts, normally less than 1% of the plant’s total weight. Because of this, more complicated harvesting and extraction methods are required to ensure that the oil has significant levels of CBG.
Historically, the majority of cannabinoid research has been focussed on THC and CBD. However, as time progresses the powers of other cannabinoids, such as CBG, are becoming more evident.
Whilst research on CBG is fairly limited, initial findings have been nothing but positive. Type ‘CBG Oil Benefits’ into Google for more information.
Whilst CBG and CBD are completely different cannabinoids, CBG Oil shares many similarities with CBD Oil.
Both are safe, natural oils that are normally extracted from Hemp plants that have near-zero THC content. Hemp oils that contain CBD and CBG have also both been consumed by humans for thousands of years with no reported adverse health effects.
Today, they are both commonly made using CO2 extraction. This method of extraction is very popular as it can be adjusted to determine the levels of beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant matter that will remain in the final product. It is also known as the cleanest and safest method of extracting cannabinoids as it leaves no chemical residues in the extract.
The Best Oils, whether that be CBG or CBD Oil, are extracted in a way that preserves the widest range of beneficial compounds as possible, as this maximises the range of benefits and entourage effect. In simple terms, the entourage effect is where the effectiveness of a cannabinoid is much greater when surrounded by the range of phytochemicals that naturally occur in the hemp plant.
CBD and CBG can be isolated into a pure crystal form and then mixed with a carrier oil. However, we do not recommend using this type of oil as they tend to be less effective than full spectrum oils.
Both CBD and CBG Oils interact with cannabinoid receptors in our own bodies which in turn regulates our endocannabinoid systems. This regulation can promote internal balance and increase the sense of wellbeing in the user.
Finally, both CBG and CBD can reduce the negative effects of THC.
The most obvious difference between CBG and CBD oil is that CBG Hemp Oil contains elevated levels of CBG and CBGA. However, it is important to note that CBG Oils normally also contain CBD.
Our oil contains approximately 1.5% CBG/CBGA, 1.5% CBD/CBDA. Many other CBG oils do dot retain a good balance of the acidic cannabinoids (CBGA + CBDA) and standard CBD Oils will generally only contain trace amounts of CBG.
CBG also seems to interact with our endocannabinoid systems differently to CBD, which explains why many customers report a different effect. Usually more calming.
Another significant difference is that CBG Hemp Oil is much more expensive to make. As there are very low levels of CBG in the hemp plant, much more hemp is needed to be able to extract a significant amount which means more raw materials + more work.
The harvesting time for CBG is also different. CBG levels are at their highest around 6 weeks after planting the hemp plants. Harvesting for CBD is normally between 7-9 weeks.
Is CBG Oil Better?
This a difficult question to tackle as it largely depends on what the oil is being used for and what one defines as ‘better’.
CBG Hemp Oil does seem to be more potent and have a stronger effect than CBD Hemp Oil in general.
Several customers have even compared the effect of our 3% CBG Hemp Oil to our some of our stronger CBD oils. Some people have also reported that it has different effects that we can’t go into in this article due to legal requirements.
We suspect that the power of this oil is not only because it contains high levels of CBG, but also due to an increased entourage effect.
An important point to consider when trying to find if something is better for you personally is that everyone is different. Some people may have better results with an oil containing high levels of CBG and others with an oil containing higher levels of CBD, the only real way to find out is to try them both and see for yourself.
