The Endocannabinoid System Explained

What is the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)?

 

The ECS is an internal bodily system that can be found in nearly every animal organism, including humans.

It comprises of endocannabinoids, which are cannabinoids that are naturally produced within the body. And cannabinoid receptors, that are the receptors in which all cannabinoids interact with.

The ECS was discovered as a result of many scientists trying to understand how phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids from plants) interact with the human body.

The first step in this discovery was identifying and isolating the cannabinoids that had an effect on the body. In the 1960s, renowned cannabinoid researchers Roger Adams & Raphael Mechoulam isolated two of the most well-known phytocannabinoids: CBD and THC, from the cannabis plant.

Following this, the knowledge of cannabinoids gradually increased. In the 1980s cannabinoid receptors were found in the brain of an animal, and then in the 1990s, Mechoulam discovered cannabinoids that were naturally produced in the human body (endocannabinoids).

The ECS remains under preliminary research, but so far the science indicates that its main function is to help the body to achieve homeostasis. Homeostasis is the state in which all bodily functions are working to the best of their ability.

Consequently, scientists believe that the ECS can have an important impact on aspects such as:

  • Memory
  • Sleep
  • Stress
  • Pain
  • Appetite
  • Energy Balance
  • The Immune System
  • Mood
  • Fertility

The two most important endocannabinoids are anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol. These cannabinoids bind to or interact with receptors such as CB1 and CB2 that are found in the brain and body.

Cannabis or Hemp plants produce at least 120 different phytocannabinoids that can interact with our ECS.

 

What Impact Does CBD Have On The ECS?

As previously stated, ECS research is still preliminary and much more work needs to be done for it to be set in stone.

However, initial findings suggest that CBD found in products such as our 5% CBD Oil, seems to prevent the degradation of anandamide, which in turn leads to increased levels for use in the ECS.

If the science is to later conclude that increased levels of anandamide lead to a better functioning ECS and thus better overall health from homeostasis, it would be accurate to say that CBD indirectly helps the body to achieve homeostasis.

The range of health benefits that could come from being in homeostasis is profound. And the findings so far seem to be backed up by the anecdotal evidence from customer feedback.
